Help horses at tax timeUnwanted? Not if we can help it - Colorado Tax Payers donate $88,000 to help unwanted horses using the Tax Check-off.

The Unwanted Horse Fund, which appeared on Colorado state income tax forms for the first time in 2011, raised $88,000 to help with unwanted horse programs.  The tax check-off makes it easy for tax payers to donate some of their tax refunds to help address the problem of unwanted horses in Colorado.

CUHA awards $62,000 to Colorado organizations

Thursday, 16 December 2010 15:03

CUHA Funds Awarded to RescuesCUHA awards $62,000 to 16 Colorado organizations working to improve the welfare of horses in Colorado. CUHA provided grants to programs focused on horse training, gelding, and humane end-of-life initiatives in an effort to help horse rescues increase the adoptability of their horses, reduce horse overpopulation, and assist owners who no longer want their horse, for whatever reason, to make a responsible decision about the horse’s future.

One of the largest problems horse rescues face is that many of the healthy horses that come to them are untrained youngsters. Not many people want to adopt an untrained horse, so with these training grants the rescues can help move horses into new homes. Gelding grants were provided because gelding is an essential tool in controlling the horse population and, as a result, the number of unwanted horses.  CUHA’s grants in this area are intended to help provide education and support to horse owners who may want to geld their horses but lack the money or resources to do so. CUHA grants also supported the provision of humane end-of-life options for unadoptable, unhealthy horses in an effort to help reduce the cases of abandonment, abuse, and neglect by connecting horse owners to resources they weren’t aware of or couldn’t afford.
